New ideas, innovations and good ideas that just never get old

The sessions will cover a range of topics to provide designers with expert advice, latest exemplars and best practice. Each session comprises 15 minute presentations, followed by an opportunity to ‘ask the experts’ and find out more about products and samples on display.

This year the seminar area will include a feature on innovation that will illustrate how the concrete industry is continually moving and developing. The specially-curated items will explore innovation in action to achieve beautiful, low carbon concrete and which improves thermal performance. The ‘Clever Concrete’ exhibit will also provide insight into the many ways that designers can influence the performance and applications of concrete.

Seminar Programme

TUESDAY 7 MARCH 2017
11:00 - 12:00 Sustainable concrete: Good ideas for the specification of responsibly sourced, sustainable concrete, including low carbon cements, use of recycled aggregates and traceability of reinforcement.
12:30 - 13:30 21st Century thermal mass: Ancient technique - new applications: The merits of using thermal mass are well established and certainly not new, but alongside these, new applications are emerging, which align well the challenges of the evolving environment in which we live. Solutions and case studies will be presented.
14:00 - 15:00 Good looking concrete: Whether pigmented, polished or textured, patterned or plain or everything in between, the key is understanding the options available. Samples will also be on display.
15:30 -16:30  High performance floors for housing: Uncovering the hidden performance benefits that precast concrete floors offer throughout the lifetime of a home - acoustic performance, energy efficiency, fire resistance, robustness and adaptability.

WEDNESDAY 8 MARCH 2017
11:00 - 12:00 Innovations for housing using concrete and masonry: Explore some of the new products and methods of construction evolving to facilitate the construction of energy efficiency, high performance housing using concrete and masonry.
12:30 - 13:45  New ideas for low carbon concrete: New ideas in both specification and application of concrete will be explored with a look at novel cements, concrete’s whole life performance, and the ability of concrete to act as a carbon sink.
14:00 -15:00 Demystifying BIM and EPD’s for Concrete and Masonry: This session will explains the principles behind BIM and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and how the concrete industry is supporting their development.
15: 30 -16:30  Sustainable Performance and Resource Efficiency – An update on industry initiatives: The latest data from the concrete industry including carbon and waste reduction and the role of the sector in enhancing biodiversity to provide an update on the sustainability credentials of UK concrete and masonry.

THURSDAY 9 MARCH 2016
11:00 - 12:00 Clever Concrete: Concrete is fundamentally a clever material, this sessions looks at concrete’s usefulness for an unparalleled range of applications.
12:30 - 13:00  Basements and waterproofing – Essential information: Contemporary basements help create desirable, sustainable properties, with more space and storage potential. The session provides essential guidance on detailing, waterproofing and construction of basements
14:00 - 15:00 Reducing thermal bridging: Reducing cold bridging is an essential part of contemporary energy efficiency design, not only to improve overall thermal performance but also to reduce the likelihood of mould growth. This session provides guidance for detailing and products and construction solutions developed to reduce thermal bridging.

The seminars take place on The Concrete Centre stand D127 & D150

Seats are available on a first come first served basis, although standing room is available.
