Seminar: Ribbed slabs – the contemporary solution

Ribbed slabs can provide a lighter and stiffer slab than a typical flat slab which reduces vibrations and decreases the sizes for columns and foundations. The increased surface area of concrete can also enhance thermal mass performance of the building, so reducing the servicing requirements. This means that ribbed slabs offer the possibility of reductions to both embodied energy, by decreasing the material use, and operational energy.

At the Royal College of Pathologists, the dramatic ceilings feature deep concrete coffers spanning the 13m depth of the building. The project was also designed with long-life and adaptability in mind. The project team will discuss what drove the integrated solution of the coffered ceiling that both minimises weight and makes full use of the concrete’s thermal mass by maximising the surface area in contact with air.
