The Concrete Centre and Modern Masonry Alliance have joined with UK Construction Week to host a Better Built in Housing Hub. This new feature for UK Construction Week includes a seminar theatre and exhibits.

The hub will be the venue for three days of informative seminars including the Modern Masonry Conference on Wednesday 10th October. The sessions will cover a range of topics to provide practical guidance for high quality, high performance homes.  Each session comprises 15 minute presentations, followed by an opportunity to ‘ask the experts’ and find out more about products and samples on display.

Offsite and Hybrid Solutions for Housing

This series of presentations explores the virtually unlimited application of offsite concrete for single and multi-storey housing. Offsite concrete construction ranges from building elements to whole building solutions and this session explores their benefits, application and recent case studies.

  • Concrete offsite solutions - Elaine Toogood, senior architect, The Concrete Centre
Elaine will provide an overview of offsite concrete solutions and the benefits for designers, contractors and occupants. Design guidance to optimise cost and speed of construction will also be discussed.

  • London City Island:  high speed, high quality hybrid concrete construction - David Henderson, studio director, Glenn Howells Architects
At GHA’s London City Island the 1,706 new homes have achieved high-build-quality using a cast in situ concrete frame with precast brick and concrete panels.  This method has created 11 striking coloured buildings at London City Island an using these highly modelled facade units, some weighing as much as 23 tonnes has enabled the project to be delivered to an extraordinarily high standard and at high speed, with each floor of a building being completed in seven days.

  • Offsite concrete house in two days - David Moses, preconstruction director, Cornish Concrete Products (CCP)
This presentation is a study of the design, manufacture and installation of the structural frame of a bespoke precast concrete house in just two days.
CCP has developed a special fibre reinforced concrete panel system which allows the producer to bring concrete panel systems, normally associated with large scale buildings to the domestic housing development.
13:00
Low Carbon, Low Energy Concrete and Masonry Homes

  • Low carbon cements – a UK perspective - Dr Colum McCague, technical manager, MPA Cement
As designers and specifiers of concrete, should we know anything more about cement – the “clever powder in concrete”? If our goal is to minimise embodied carbon then yes. This presentation summarises some of the key challenges facing UK cement production, with particular focus on the development of new products and standards.

  • Achieving lowest whole-life carbon homes - Tom De Saulles, sustainability senior manager, The Concrete Centre
Homes built today will need to last well into the next century if not longer, making the building form and fabric critical components in delivering longevity and optimal whole-life carbon performance. This presentation summarises simple passive design measures to help ensure low, in-use carbon emissions and occupant comfort for many decades to come.

  • Designing for material efficiency - Elaine Toogood, senior architect, The Concrete Centre
Minimising waste and using materials efficiently can provide both economic and environmental benefit. Designers can influence the material efficiency of their project by choosing construction methods that reduce the amount of material required - for example post-tensioned concrete slabs and precast slabs with void formers. Frame solutions can also use concrete as a finish, reducing the need for other materials.  Elaine will provide guidance on using concrete for material efficient construction.
